GCP Recommendations
Similar to AWS and GCP, Yotascale provides both billing account-level and utilization-level cost optimization recommendations for GCP. Billing account-level recommendations focus on maximizing discounts, while utilization-level recommendations offer granular insights into resource usage within each project and across various cloud services.
Commitment Use Discount (CUDs)
These discount-level recommendations are generated by the GCP Recommender service and are refreshed daily for each billing account. Yotascale identifies the recommendation offering the highest potential savings for each unique combination of the following attributes:
Project: The GCP project associated with the resource.
Region: The geographical region where the resource is deployed.
Type: Whether the recommendation targets vCPU or memory optimization.
The highest savings are determined by evaluating the best option based on these choices:
Plan: Choose between a 12-month or 36-month commitment period.
Algorithm: Select either the "break-even point" or "low watermark" algorithm for calculating potential savings.
Utilization Recommendations
These recommendations are resource-specific and tailored to each cloud service provider. Because they are calculated based on recent resource utilization, they are highly dynamic and can change daily.
Unlike other recommendations, these offer specific actions, such as shutting down an idle server or rightsizing to a more cost-effective instance type that maintains performance. These actions have a direct and immediate impact on daily costs.
A key advantage is that these recommendations can be directly linked to the business context lenses. By mapping the resource IDs to the corresponding nodes in the business hierarchy, each team can see only the recommendations relevant to their specific workloads, making them more actionable.
To maintain optimal cost control, we strongly recommend that teams review these cost-saving recommendations several times a week, in conjunction with monitoring for potential cost spikes (anomalies).
Settings
Yotascale allows customization of default settings for GCP recommendations:
Recommendation Count: Control the number of recommendations displayed (default: 100).
Minimum Savings Threshold: Set the minimum potential dollar savings required for a recommendation to be displayed (default: $100).
